Pointing (locked candidates)

What it is

If a digit in a box can only go in one row or column, it can be removed from the rest of that row or column.

How to spot it

With notes, look inside a box: are all candidates for one digit lined up in a single row or column? Then the digit must be on that line inside the box.

  • Basis
  • Removed / placed
In box 1, 4 can only go in r1c1 or r1c2 – both in row 1. So 4 can be removed from the rest of row 1: r1c5 and r1c8.
